Lab Innovations 2024 wrapped up yesterday after two days of exciting exhibitions, insightful talks, and the much-anticipated Lab Awards. Held at the NEC in Birmingham, the event brought together thousands of laboratory professionals, suppliers, and scientists to explore the latest trends shaping the future of the laboratory sector.

Exhibitors draw attention with innovative products

Across the exhibition floor, attendees had the opportunity to interact with a variety of innovative stands showcasing cutting-edge technologies. From sustainability-focused solutions to advanced automation systems, the exhibitors impressed visitors with their ability to address key challenges facing modern laboratories. We saw products ranging from remote robotic lab assistance to LLM powered health & safety helpers and fibre optic gas sensors.

The hands-on demonstrations offered by many companies were especially well-received, including whack-a-molecule and build your own Lego figure and the chance to see new products in action and ask questions directly to the experts behind them. You could have also found the editor of Lab News giving away free copies and if you were quick you might have spotted our editor buzzing from stand-to-stand.

Talks highlight the future of lab technology

In addition to the exhibitions, Lab Innovations 2024 featured a packed programme of talks that delved into the latest advancements in laboratory science. There were so many amazing booths around the show but some stand outs for us were SLS, SDi Group, Waters, Thermo, Analytix (very spooky), Bronkhorst, Clinisys, KNF and eLabNext we hope you had a chance to see them and talk to people on their stands.

The seminars and talks also offered throughout the event provided deeper insights into specific areas of the industry, including developments in biotechnology and digitalisation. Our regular feature provider CompSci cat did a packed out talk all about how to get started with ELNs and Data Revival showed us all about how they are trying to fix the past lab books with the future of data scanning. There were also talks more focused on sustainability, including one outlining the My Green Labs ACT and Unigreenscheme who enticed people to their booth with offers of board games.

Celebrating the industry’s best: Lab Awards winners

The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the Lab Awards ceremony, which celebrated the standout contributions to the industry over the past year. Categories such as Sustainable Laboratory of the Year and Best New Product honoured companies and individuals who are leading the way in innovation, sustainability, and excellence in laboratory practices. The show for the awards was packed right up to the curtains and was excellently narrated by our editor Matthew Partridge and hosted by the Time’s Tom Whipple.

You can see all the award winners in more detail here, but we’d like to pass on our congratulations to all of them and for all the other impressive entries.

With two successful days of exhibitions, expert discussions, and celebrations, Lab Innovations 2024 once again proved to be an essential event for laboratory professionals. Whether through discovering new products, networking with industry peers, or gaining insights from leading experts, attendees left with valuable takeaways that will help shape the future of their work.

They also left with a wide range of amazing notebooks, fluffy toys, chocolate, Lego and more than enough tote bags to pack a whole stand into.

For those who missed this year’s event, Lab Innovations will return in 2025, promising even more groundbreaking developments in laboratory science and technology.
